All-terrain vehicle (ATV) enthusiasts from around the state, region, and nation gathered in Silver Bay on Saturday in an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records entry for “the world’s longest ATV parade.” The count has yet to be verified by officials, but organizers are confident that the June 13 count of 1,632 will stand – topping the record set in 2006 by the Harlan County Ridge Runners in Evarts, Kentucky. That record was 1,138 four-wheelers.

If it seemed that there were more bikers on the Gitchi Gami Bicycle Trail during the last week, it’s because 180 people were taking part in a “Jaunt with Jim” bike ride, a 35-year tradition, which this year followed the theme “Echoes of the Voyageurs.”

The Grand Marais City Council discussed what it saw as a can of worms at its regular meeting on June 14 when the owners of a downtown restaurant requested permission to allow consumption of beer and wine on the sidewalk in front of their business. They said they were making the request after numerous customers had asked for the service. However, the city has an ordinance that prohibits consumption of alcohol on the public streets and sidewalks.

The clearing of an area on 14th Avenue West in Grand Marais caused a bit of a ruckus early last week. The owners of two of the lots in the area, one across the way from the other, had asked the city to clear the undeveloped “street” area to the point where their driveways would be starting, and the street was cleared about 100 feet too far. That extra clearing took out about a dozen trees, and many people were angry.

The gruesome tragedy of slipping off the shore rocks and being washed over the Cross River falls of Schroeder and drowned was the terrible fate of a Duluth IRS officer last Sunday evening. It is believed the man walked up the river bank and was taking pictures of the beautiful scenery when his foot slipped and he plunged into the water. His head may have been dashed against a rock and instant death resulted. The rapids carried him over the falls into the channel below.

Mike Jost has purchased a new car.

An Oldsmobile car containing five passengers drove off the road near the Devil’s Track River east of here last Tuesday evening, turning completely over and landing with all four wheels in the air. Only one of the occupants of the car was hurt, a woman who suffered minor injuries. The car was not damaged except for a slight dent on the top of the radiator and one fender.

Anna Freeberg and Evelina Staples completed the eighth grade at the Rosebush school in May and were granted their diplomas. These diplomas should have been given out at graduation exercises during commencement week, but were overlooked at that time.
