Some property owners in the hinterlands of Cook County might be paying more in property taxes in the future, but in exchange they would be safer if their homes and cabins caught fire. A contingent of firefighters presented to the county board on May 26 a proposal to expand fire district boundaries to include private property from Lake Superior to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. County Attorney Tim Scannell agreed to investigate the legalities of expanding the fire districts, and report back to the board June 9.

Saturday night a car driven by an unidentified hit-and-run driver collided with the Ford driven by Emil Anderson, maintenance man on the Gunflint Trail. The accident happened near Northern Light Lake when Mr. Anderson had turned off to the side of the road to allow the other car to pass. The approaching car came with such terrific speed that it rammed into the Anderson car, tearing two wheels and another tire. No damage was done to the strange car, which did not stop.
