Beth Schwarz, currently director of education and licensing at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, has accepted the position of ISD 166 superintendent. She signed a three-year contract at a salary of $95,000 a year.

Shannon Braford and Joel Bonin were named 2009 Prom Queen and King at a coronation ceremony held May 16 at Cook County High School.

MAY 24, 1999

Chief Deputy Mark Falk has resigned his position with the Cook County Sheriff ’s Department to become chief of police in Canby, Minn. Upon hearing of Falk’s resignation, most county residents who have come to know and admire Falk over his 10 years in law enforcement here had two questions: What are we going to do now? And, where’s Canby?

Cook County school board members are considering the possibility of adding a curriculum that trains students to repair and operate computers next year. For $20,000 the district would get a teacher trained, curriculum and technical support and assessment for two years. It would include students in grades 7 through 12.

MAY 22, 1969

Approximately 300 people attended the grand opening day of Marvel’s Shop last Saturday. Mrs. Marvel Soderlund, the new owner, presented a newly renovated women’s and children’s apparel shop to the public. As a welcome, coffee was served throughout the afternoon.

The Paradise Beach Resort has been sold to Peter and Adeline Sorlie of St. Paul. It was formerly owned by Mr. and Mrs. Marty Clark. The deal was made on May 15 when the new owners took over the property. Future plans have not crystallized.

90 YEARS AGO
MAY 23, 1929

Linnea Anderson won the right to spend a week at the Gunflint Lodge, an honor conferred upon the highest ranking and most representative scholar by Mrs. Blankenburg of the Gunflint Lodge.

Fire originating from a spark on the roof of the house owned by Mr. and Mrs. Martin Erickson of Maple Hill destroyed the structure completely last Saturday morning. The Hedstrom mill whistle gave the alarm and neighbors rushed to the scene to aid with fighting the fire.
