Ground will be broken in June 2009 on a new visitors center and Grand Portage State Park headquarters in Grand Portage. T.L. Construction of Floodwood, Minn., the company that built the Grand Portage National Monument Heritage Center, was the low bidder for the project at $3,945,535. The project is to be completed by Memorial Day 2010.

A large group turned out to support the rebuild fundraiser for Trout Lake Lodge on May 9. The lodge, located on the Gunflint Trail, was destroyed by fire on April 22.

Despite a last-minute wave of protests, the Cook County commissioners voted 4-1 to accept the recommendations of the kennel committee, putting in place an ordinance governing kennel operations. However, the board promised to rework or redefine some of its zoning classifications in an effort to clear up the issues left unresolved by the new dog ordinance.

MAY 17, 1999

Cook County Middle School seventh-grader Devan Futterer has been chosen as a member of the Minnesota “Elite 8” basketball team. The team is made up of 10 of the top players in the state. It will participate in basketball tournaments this summer in Kentucky, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.

About 25 people braved the wind and cold of Tuesday to meet and greet two members from the state DNR who were in town to discuss the possibility of a large grant from the DNR to assist with the purchase of Gene’s Standard property by the city of Grand Marais. The Natural and Scenic Area Grant Program offers up to $500,000 for the creation of or preservation of green space; Grand Marais is asking for $300,000—half of the purchase price for the property.

MAY 15, 1969

The Harold Ikolas will be at their resort, Windigo Lodge on the Gunflint Trail, and they have rented their town house to the Ed Bielkes, who will come from Florida.

Tim Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Anderson, took part in the National Piano Playing Auditions in Duluth last Saturday. He was declared a district winner with a classification of 97 percent Superior.

A dinner at Lutsen Resort was held Tuesday evening in recognition of the teachers who are leaving the Cook County School facility. Fifty-two guests attended.

After being away for five weeks, the Andersons returned from Seattle on Saturday and were met at the train depot in Duluth by Wayne.

90 YEARS AGO
MAY 16, 1929

The Grand Marais tourist park will be officially opened for business on the twentieth of this month.

The Lakeview Dairy has purchased two new thoroughbred milk cows. Axel Backlund made the trip to Duluth for them last Monday.

The Canadians are contemplating the building of a 400-mile highway along the Lake Superior shoreline. This will link with the American No. 1 road and allow the people to travel the entire distance around the lake overland.

Ed Dalbec has installed a new furnace.

The construction of a concrete sidewalk between the Arrowhead Hotel and the Village Hall is going forward rapidly and will soon be completed.

John Toftey is employed at the Northwestern Oil Station.
