Gunflint Tavern owner Jeff Gecas reported on April 29 that the tavern’s chef had discovered a break-in in progress at 9:27 p.m. A few steaks were taken. The chef said he was disposing of a box at the rear of the Fireweed Building when he saw two juveniles exiting the walk-in freezer. They apparently entered the freezer from inside the building, slipping past a posted “Employees Only” door. Police are still seeking the identities of the culprits.

By a 4-1 vote, Grand Marais city councilors approved the annexation of about 50 parcels in the Blackwell Addition into the city during their April 29 meeting. Unlike the public hearing held a month earlier, there were no residents of the affected section of Creechville in attendance to comment on or witness the vote. Residents who were opposed to being annexed into the city commented mainly against the requirement to hook up to the public sewer lines, and an expected increase in taxes.

The voice on the tape sounded like that of a young kid trying to fake laryngitis in order to get out of going to school. And, that was conceivably the intent of the caller. But the words “bomb” and “tomorrow” were thought to be heard on the message left on five voice mail boxes at the Sawtooth Elementary School Thursday. On what Superintendent Dale Tormondsen described as “the most beautiful day of the year,” 48 staff members came to school on Saturday to enter the building and look for anything suspicious. The call turned out to be a prank, but officials said they had to take it seriously.

There was a fire on Britton Peak Friday, near Tofte and the Superior Hiking Trail. The Forest Service Beaver airplane was able to do water pick-ups from Lake Superior, so a load of water could be dumped on the fire every few minutes. The incident attracted an audience of about 30 or 40 people who wanted to watch the show.
