The county board learned Tuesday that it would qualify for FEMA disaster funds for clean-up of a March ice storm if an extra $20,000 was spent to hire outside contractors to repair damaged roads. County roads suffered damages that would cost about $15,000 for the county crew to repair on its own; DNR trails incurred another $15,000 in damage.

As snow melted in Tofte, a homeowner made a startling discovery – two moose carcasses lying in the electrical power line crossing his property. Gary Kinler reported the find near Overlook Trail to Cook County law enforcement, which referred the matter to the state DNR. A conservation officer later confirmed that the moose had been shot, and probably taken legally last fall.

MAY 3, 1999

The North Superior Ski and Run Club was recently named one of 51 groups nationwide to receive a National Volunteer Award from the U.S. Forest Service. The club was recognized for over 20 years of maintaining the Pincushion trails and for its recent efforts to upgrade the trails and grooming, and to construct a trail center.

On Thursday, the elementary school population took cover. It was Tornado Awareness Day in Minnesota, and a mock alert was delivered to the school administration. The students were then sent to the closest, safe place to wait out the “big blow.” Even though tornadoes are almost unheard of in Cook County, the students will now know what to do.

50 YEARS AGO
MAY 1, 1969

The streams are now ice free, but still ice cold as Mr. and Mrs. Dave Hess and Mike West can tell you. They were loading the canoe just above the rapids in Stump River when it was caught by the current. Mike, Marion and two beaver and the gear were dumped in four feet of water; Dave was pulled in too as he was holding on to the canoe. There was minor damage to the canoe and they lost a pack sack and the largest beaver they had caught this year!

Richard Ouellette, who has been an English teacher at the high school for the past nine years, has accepted a new position at Stonington, Connecticut. The family plans to remain here through the summer, and then sell their house, the former M.J. Humphrey place.

90 YEARS AGO
MAY 2, 1929

It is reported that Charles Boostrom, local resort owner, will establish a bus line in the near future, to run between Grand Marais, Clearwater and the Weyerhauser lumber camps. At present Mr. Boostrom is in Minneapolis completing arrangements for the above line.

Pearl Samskar was absent from school three days last week because of illness.

A shipment of whitefish fry from the hatchery at the head of the lakes is expected to arrive tomorrow. They will be planted in the lake somewhere near town.

Ira Butterfield left for Mankato yesterday where he will be employed as a truck driver for the county.
