A fire on April 22 destroyed the main building at Trout Lake Resort. Firefighters’ efforts were hampered by the poor road conditions, which delayed the response time. A family member who was living in the main lodge was awakened by the smoke around 4:45 a.m. He left the building to call 911 but was unable to get a signal. He had to re-enter the building to use the rotary phone instead, as the structure continued to fill with smoke. He then attempted to squelch the flames with a fire extinguisher and garden hoses, but it was apparent that the fire was growing too rapidly.

It is apparent why this change has taken place. For some time, the members have felt that due to the church location on the famous Gunflint Trail, this should be taken into consideration.

It is a shame that Grand Marais and the rest of the North Shore will be “left out of the picture” with regard to the Duluth- Port Arthur and Isle Royale boat cruise. Much of the interest of such a trip will be lacking and the North Shore will gain little or nothing from such service.
The local streets are being repaired.
George Sawyer, who spent the winter in Grand Marais, left for Isle Royale Friday morning. He will spend the summer fishing there.
