Cook County Highway Engineer Shae Kosmalski anticipates that Federal Emergency Management Agency projects will take up much of her crew’s time this summer. Three hundred ten truck and driver hours, 155 equipment and operator hours, 140 feet of galvanized pipe culvert, and 2,000 yards of crushed gravel will be used on 25 roads to mitigate the effects of last June’s flood. All work must be done by the end of the season.

A serious injury car accident occurred at mile marker 70 near the Caribou River on Highway 61 on Tuesday. Four people were transported to Cook County North Shore Hospital after a pick-up truck hit snow and ice and spun out of control, colliding with another vehicle near the Cook-Lake county border.

The Cook County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously March 30 to begin audio-taping their board meetings. Oddly enough, however, the recordings will be destroyed after 30 days and not transcribed. Neither Lake, St. Louis nor Carlton counties, all of whom tape their county board meetings, follows such a practice.

The choice presented by County Highway Engineer Chuck Schmit was simple: either post the South Brule bridge as a bone-jarring hazard to drivers or spend about $25,000 to fix the problem. The complaints from motorists who have gotten a sudden adjustment to their vehicle chassis and/or vertebrae on the new Gunflint Trail bridge have been piling up for a year. Because the bumps resulted from errors made by county staff, any fixing will be at county expense.

A 45-year-old employee of Erie Mining’s taconite plant in Taconite Harbor lost his life in a fire that destroyed his trailer home on the Cramer Road at Schroeder Monday night. The fire apparently started around 9:15 p.m. in the western end of the trailer and a west wind enveloped the place in flames very quickly. Not until midnight was it established that the victim was in the smoldering ruins.

Three different reports have come to us that persons or families have been frightened by the presence of a prowler who has appeared at night peeping in windows and disturbing the peace. The law does not deal lightly with such cases and it would go hard with the mischief-maker if he were apprehended. Mayor Fenstead has received complaints about the alleged “Peeping Tom” and will take the matter up with the city council. It is possible that a special policeman may be placed on duty to put a stop to this in the future.

The new ranger cabin at Hovland will be finished by May 1 or possibly before, according to Arnold Erickson. Two rangers will be stationed there all summer. The cabin is situated on the south side of the Hovland town hall.
