MARCH 21, 2009

Students at Sawtooth Mountain Elementary School collected money for the annual “Pennies for Patients” program to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and after three weeks of bringing in their spare change to school, raised $1,166.31.

The Cook County High School robot team “The Iron Scorchers” is off to a great start! This is the first year the students have participated in FIRST robotics competition. The robot has been completed and the students are getting ready to take it to Minneapolis to compete against 104 other schools April 2-4.

MARCH 22, 1999

Over 40 residents gathered at the Schroeder Town Hall on March 15 to hear how plans for a shared wastewater treatment plant would impact them. The majority of questions focused on financial rather than technical aspects of the project. The total estimated cost for the proposed facility is $7.2 million.

If all goes well, next ice hockey season some Cook County players will suit up and play on the Silver Bay team, thanks to a decision by the Silver Bay school board to co-sponsor ice hockey with Cook County. The new team will be known as the “Mariners.”

MARCH 20, 1969

Mary Bierbaum of Schroeder, a senior at Cook County High School, received word Tuesday that she was chosen on the All- State Lutheran Choir. She was one of 55 to be selected from 250 who tried out.

Eckel’s Apparel Shop has been sold to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Soderlund, who will take possession May 15. The shop was built by the Eckels 15 years ago; Mrs. Eckel has conducted the apparel business continuously since June 1954. The Soderlunds plan to remodel the shop somewhat, and they will change the name to “Marvel’s Dress Shop.”

The bookmobile which will serve Cook County has been delivered to the Arrowhead Library System. This is a large bookmobile with a capacity of 3,500 volumes. It will be ready for service soon.

MARCH 21, 1929

Karl M. Johnson is building two new cabins on his property near the East Bay. August A. Lindskog is assisting with the work.

Florence Andert was badly burned last week when a kettle of boiling water was accidentally spilled over her body.

H.O. Toftey was severely injured last Saturday while shoving his boat into the water at his fishing place at Onion River. The boat came to a sudden stop as he was in the act of pushing it out and he was thrown against the bow. He lay helpless for about half an hour before he was able to move from the spot.
