The county board agreed March 10 to pay an additional $40,000 to complete design and engineering work on the Lutsen Ski Hill Road project. The action was necessary because the county’s partner in the project, Lutsen Mountains Corporation, has already exceeded its not-to-exceed amount earmarked for engineering. By having the county put up the extra fees, the project will be expedited and it will eliminate the need for further negotiations and thus delays with Lutsen Mountains, over who pays what.
Lutsen Mountains will host the 2009 North American Snowsports Journalist Association March 18, with an expected 65 attendees. A host of activities is planned for the journalists, all of which will showcase Cook County.

Last Monday afternoon Fred Drouillard stood trial at the courthouse at Grand Marais, charged with having in his possession a live fisher for the purpose of breeding without having obtained a permit to do so. Drouillard said his intentions were to sell the animal alive. The charge was brought as the result of apprehension by local game wardens. Evidence in the case was meager, and a verdict of not guilty was returned by the jury, which was out only 10 minutes. Much interest was shown in the trial, the courtroom being well filled to capacity.
