After five hours of interviews and discussion Feb. 23 regarding which of two superintendent candidates to hire—Cook County High School Principal John Engelking or Sawtooth Elementary Principal Gwen Carman— the School District 166 school board is without any candidate. Engelking was offered the job but turned it down after accepting a superintendent position with the Proctor schools that was offered to him immediately following his interview here. After Engelking turned down the board’s offer, Carman withdrew from consideration as well; according to school board chair Bill Huggins, Carman had more interest in the position when she thought she would be working with Engelking.

Due to cuts in state aid, the city’s administrators are looking for ways to slash at least $50,000 from Grand Marais’ 2009 budget, and about twice that amount in 2010. According to City Administrator Mike Roth, the city has seen its allotment of Local Government Aid drop from $365,199 in 2001 to an expected $80,426 in 2010. That amount hasn’t gone up since 2001.

In only the third season of existence, the Cook County Pee Wees closed their most wildly successful venture by placing second in the Northern State Regional final. The progress of this group has been absolutely outstanding given the fact that every single team Cook County has played this year has the advantage of indoor ice three or four times a week, and Cook County technically has played all road games this year.

Schroeder Town Clerk Carla Menssen has reported that no has filed for the township’s vacant supervisor position. That means voters will have to write in a candidate to represent them on the town board for the next two years.

MARCH 6, 1969

Jean Goutcher, niece of the Gordon Wonsers, who is a junior at Winona State College, was chosen “Nurse of the Year” recently. As part of her pediatrics training, Miss Goutcher was at Miller Hospital in Minneapolis.

Without ever seeing a rotary snowplow, Ed Skou of Schroeder has constructed one. It will be used on a Cat, and from all appearances will work.

A dead moose was found by some snowmobilers in the Colvill area last weekend.

Mrs. Raymond Klug, the former Elaine Jacobsen of Little Marais, has recently cut a stereo record, “God and My Country,” which features numerous patriotic and religious songs. Mrs. Klug was a member of the Zoar Lutheran choir in 1956.

MARCH 7, 1929

Do you like homemade donuts? Try them at the village hall Tuesday.

A new church is being built at Mineral Center. C.O. Backlund is doing the work which is progressing rapidly.

A bridge party was given by Mrs. Carl Sjoberg last Tuesday. Mrs. A.M. Anderson won first prize. A delicious chicken supper was served.

The Parent-Teacher Association will hold their next meeting Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. The subject for discussion is “Boys.” Mr. Webber and Mr. Tofte will be the speakers. The third-grade children under the direction of Miss Stevenson will provide the entertainment.

Lost—A pair of gold rim bifocal spectacles. If left at the News-Herald office they will be returned to owner.
