Several weeks after Cook County Veterans Service Officer Dale Tormondsen tendered his resignation upon accepting a full-time job elsewhere, the county board approved advertising for his replacement. Tormondsen will continue serving county veterans for the time being.
After at least 60 years of free television reception, is Cook County being left in the dust of change? As of June 12, 2009, the Federal Communications Commission is requiring television stations to broadcast via digital signals rather than analog. The changeover may eventually lead to no free TV for Cook County.

The Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon will start the weekend of Feb. 5 next year – four weeks later than this year’s race. Several factors went into making the decision, including lack of snow for training, and the length and toughness of the Beargrease trails which require more time to get the dogs and mushers in top shape.
In a split vote, the county commissioners turned down the West End tourist association request for a bigger share of their lodging tax dollars. The request was made because two-thirds of the lodging tax dollars collected in the West End are kept by the county to service the debt on the Superior National Golf Course in Lutsen.

FEB. 27, 1969
Last week David Oswald of Grand Marais outskied the best in the state at the high school meet in Duluth to win the honor of “State Slalom King.”
It’s still Jim’s Barber Shop, but ownership has changed from one Jim to another. Jim Featherstone has purchased Jim’s Barber Shop from Jim Nelson. The transaction took place last week; Featherstone has been employed by Nelson the past couple years.
A bit of Hollywood will be transplanted to Grand Marais this week when Larry Yust Productions of Los Angeles begins filming the Jack London story “To Build a Fire.” There will be about a dozen members of the troupe, with local people being added to the cast.
90 YEARS AGO
FEB. 28, 1929
Olson Brothers’ truck, driven by E. Beebe, was badly wrecked when it went off the road at Good Harbor Hill Tuesday. Mr. Beebe was not injured.
Ranger P.J. Bayle, who is helping to erect the Ranger Headquarters building at Moose Lake, arrived here Friday night. The structure will be 20 by 60 feet and will be built of Norway pine. Mr. Bayle says that although there has been little wind there, the temperature has been as low as 40 below zero.
