According to Minnesota Department of Natural Resources forest ecologist Steve Wilson, northeastern Minnesota is experiencing an irruption of boreal owls this winter. These irruptions are triggered by a shortage of the owls’ primary prey – small mammals – causing them to seek new areas where food is more abundant because of more favorable snow depths or conditions.

The School District 166 committee studying the possibility of instituting a four-day school week presented an outline for its action plan. A change to the school schedule, if determined to be feasible, would not be made until the 2010-11 school year.

FEB. 15, 1999

Cook County could win approval within days to run a temporary transfer station at the current landfill. According to the compliance coordinator for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, commissioners could have a document approving such an operation before them at tomorrow’s county board meeting. Under terms of an existing agreement with the MPCA, the county’s landfill must be closed by Aug. 1. A temporary transfer station at that site would receive the county’s solid waste for a few months until the start-up of a permanent transfer station.

FEB. 13, 1969

About a hundred people attended the snowmobile meeting held at the high school last Tuesday evening. Darryl Johnson and Dennis Munson of Halvorson Equipment, Duluth, spoke on the maintenance, riding and handling of snowmobiles. A snowmobile was brought into the meeting room and set up on a table as a “demonstrator.” They also showed a color movie dealing with the riding and handling of snowmobiles, which was quite interesting.

After 23 years on their farm in Rosebush, the John Sjobergs are moving to Grand Marais to live. They have sold their farm to the James Korhonens and have purchased the David Erholtz house. They plan to make their move this weekend.

During the year 1968, there were 39 deaths recorded in the Office of Clerk of District Court Carl Noyes. This compares with 46 deaths for the year 1967.

90 YEARS AGO
FEB. 21, 1929

Fritz Oberg drove from Grand Portage to Reservation Bay by way of the lake ice in 15 minutes. It takes about an hour via the road.

The Naniboujou Club outing was held last Sunday at Brule and was quite well attended considering the chilly weather. Motion pictures of the people attending were taken.
