At the first meeting of the Grand Marais City Council on Jan. 14, Sue Hakes was sworn in as mayor. Her first official duty was swearing-in new city councilor Jan Sivertson; Tim Kennedy was also sworn in after being re-elected last November.

The doors of Cornerstone Community Church are open, and many well-wishers from other churches and the community attended an open house Jan. 18 to congratulate the congregation that moved out of the First Baptist Church building in December. The church now has a new building to go with its new name. The new building is the second structure to be built in the Cedar Grove Business Park in Grand Marais.

JAN. 25, 1999

Eight individuals convicted of federal poaching violations regarding the illegal taking and interstate transport of bear and a moose near Grand Marais pled guilty to a Class A misdemeanor, for which the penalty is a fine of up to $100,000 and up to one year in jail. Officials say the group conspired to take bears without proper Minnesota hunting licenses in 1995 and 1997. Members of the group allegedly participated in skinning, butchering and packaging the animals.

Falling about $800,000 short of being able to pay for the renovation and addition to the county Care Center, hospital board chairman Vic Dunder sought excess sales tax revenues at the Jan. 12 county commissioners meeting. Dunder got what he came for. He explained that the early projected cost of $1.8 million mushroomed as the enormity of making the project adequate for the future needs of the county became clear.

JAN. 23, 1969

The Arrowhead Hotel has been closed after almost 44 years of operation. The upper two floors will be razed, with only the main floor left in which the Peterson Drug and Chuck’s Barber Shop and Bernice’s Beauty Shop are located.

Two high school boys, Bob Skoog and John Jacobsen, are running the local ski hill, known as Sawtooth Mountain Ski Area. Because of an abundance of snow, skiing is excellent.

A new film on overweight, “The Owl and Mr. Jones,” will be shown at a meeting of the Cook County Calorie Counters next Tuesday at the Congregational Church basement. The club meets weekly for weight checking.

90 YEARS AGO
JAN. 31, 1929

Freddy Hanson, a pupil in the sixth grade, had an accident last week while getting water. His brother Ralph, who was chopping the ice around the water hole, accidentally cut Freddy’s leg when his axe slipped. He struck the bone and cut it slightly. Five stitches had to be taken by Dr. Hicks, but he is now able to attend school again.

Henry Rindahl will give watch repairing services in town from now on at Shold’s Store. Mr. Rindahl is an expert in this line of work and uses the best possible materials.

Chester Linnell is now hauling mail from Mineral Center to Grand Portage. David Erickson of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company has been in town working at the central office eliminating radio interference.
