10 Years Ago · June 14, 1999 • WDSE-TV has been awarded $112,812 from the national Telecommunications Information Agency to replace an aging tower in Grand Marais that carries the signal of three Duluth television stations.
The existing tower is at the end of its lifespan and must be disassembled. The tower also has major cracks in a support leg and is beyond repair. It will cost $163,750 to replace.
• Two bids for landfill closure, one nearly double what the county was expecting, were rejected at the June 8 meeting of the county board of commissioners. Solid Waste Officer Tim Nelson told the commissioners that he was expecting bids of about $200,000 to do the work needed to close the county landfill according to state required standards.
Two out-of-county contractors submitted bids of $341,136 and $396,925. Nelson said local contractors capable of doing the work were put off by the state pollution control agency standards.
Thecounty is under a deadline to begin closure by June 15.

• Sophomore Molly Sommerness claimed the Region 7 track high jump title on June 3 with a jump of 5’1″. She will advance to the state meet in White Bear Lake June 9.
• The legislation that allows Cook County to form a hospital district in order to support the financially troubled North Shore Hospital has been signed by the governor. The formation of the district means that the hospital will be able to levy up to $300,000 per year from county taxpayers.
Taxpayers might naturally wonder if this means their taxes will increase that amount.
Theanswer is no.
The legislation’s language specifies that the amount for the hospital district must be included in the county levy limit, which is determined by a state formula.

• TheCook County high school band, under the direction of Harold Ikola, took part in the band contests at the Lions District meet in Fort William and Port Arthur last week. Although they didn’t win a prize, they gave a good account of themselves in both parades.
• Mrs. Grant will show colored slides of last year’s dancing class at the Grand Marais elementary school at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Everyone is cordially invited to come and see them.
• A purchasing committee was appointed at the hospital auxiliary executive meeting on June 2. This facilitates the acquiring of the small items requested from time to time for use at the hospital.

• S.J. Hoyt has started a box factory on the Reservation. He will manufacture boxes for fishermen and saw lumber as ordered.
• Minnesota is likely to have a great big crop — if not a bumper crop — of grasshoppers this year, says the state entomologist.
Last fall conditions were favorable for the hoppers and the signs this spring indicate an unusually large number of very voracious insects. Thisis the time to fight them.
• Work has commenced on the graveling of the Hovland road.
