DEC. 27, 2008

Cook County Law Enforcement received a call on Dec. 13, reporting a stolen vehicle. The car was found just a mile from where it was stolen, which was Howl’n Wolf Saloon. A Grand Portage man was arrested and charged with the theft/unauthorized use.

Two brothers from Maine, ages 18 and 21, pled guilty Dec. 10 to misdemeanor attempted theft charges. The charges stem from an attempt by the two to black-top the driveway of an elderly Lutsen woman last summer, and then demand an exorbitant sum for the job.

DEC. 28, 1998

On Dec. 22, Grand Marais saw the end of an era when Gene Erickson, owner of the Standard Station on the harbor, pumped his last tank of gas. Due to state tank laws, Erickson was forced to make a decision – either replace the gasoline tanks and update them properly, or stop pumping gas altogether. To update the proper way, it would cost about $250,000.

The Cook County Pee Wee hockey team took its assault on District 6 on the road last weekend for a tournament in Duluth. Unfortunately, the team’s six-game winning streak ended on Sunday with 5-2 loss to Blaine in the semi-final match.

50 YEARS AGO
DEC. 26, 1968

Mary Pratt of this village had the signal honor of having one of her paintings chosen for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company’s calendar. It was quite an honor. The calendar contains 12 full-color reproductions of original paintings chosen from works of artists in the five states served by Northwestern Bell.

David and Annette, children of the Russell Smiths, will be on the TV show “Mr. Truth” Friday. * Harry Sloan III, who helps out at the Lutsen Ski Area whenever he is home from college, lost his wallet Monday morning. That was bad enough, but he had just been paid for some vacation time work, so the wallet contained $72. The story has a happy ending—somebody turned in the lost wallet later in the day, including the money.

90 YEARS AGO
DEC. 27, 1928

Last Saturday the steamer Winyah cleared the Duluth harbor for her last trip along the North Shore this season. She was loaded with supplies and gasoline for the people of this locality. Although intending to return to Duluth last Monday so as to be in port for the Christmas holiday, Captain Martin Christianson was forced into shelter in the local harbor before a raging storm on Lake Superior.

Helen Rude is home for the holidays. She attends the State Teachers College at Duluth.
