Chris Hegg was voted 2008 Section 7A girls’ cross country “Head Coach of the Year” by his peers in the Minnesota Coaches Association. He continues as a volunteer coach year after year and has developed a large, successful team of middle and high school runners.

A break-in at Heritage Homes of Lutsen was reported on Nov. 28, and an investigation is under way to find the individual who removed six flat-screen televisions and two stereo systems. According to the property owner, a door on the lower level of a townhome had been broken. It is believed that the person(s) involved in the burglary had specific knowledge of the property, and a $1,000 reward for information is being offered.

DEC. 14, 1998

A few concerned citizens attended the Truth in Taxation hearing for the city of Grand Marais on Dec. 9. Most were concerned by the increase in the city portion of their taxes and wanted an explanation. City Clerk Todd Bodem informed those present that the 1999 levy, which was originally $529,150, or a 22 percent increase over 1998, had dropped $65,000. The new increase is 10.1 percent. Bodem said cutting the increase in half should cut property taxes in half.

While it may be difficult to start the basketball season on the heels of a state championship football season, Cook County boys’ basketball coach Don Rolando seems to have found the key. With only four days of practice under their belts, the boys defeated Virginia and Fort William last week to begin the year with a record of 2-0. “I don’t think we’ll practice the rest of the year,” said the coach.

DEC. 12, 1968

A bird tree just outside the large windows at the North Shore Nursing Home affords much pleasure to those in the home and passersby. The tree has been decorated by Sis Kesanen with popcorn chains made by some, with hunks of dry bread donated by local eating places, with suet from local meat counters, and with seeds collected and put in mesh bags. And the birds are right there for a hand-out!

Bjarne Johnson injured his right hand while at work at Ed Skou’s lumber camp in the Tait Lake area. The board that he was putting through a jointer snapped back and if it had not been for a quick move he might have lost his fingers.

Sales of guns and ammunition will be controlled under the new federal gun law that takes effect Dec. 16. The new law should not place any unreasonable restrictions on the purchase of ordinary guns used for hunting, target shooting or other lawful purposes. Persons under 21 will be prohibited from purchasing pistols, revolvers and ammunition for such weapons and persons under 18 will not be permitted to purchase any firearms or ammunition.

DEC. 13, 1928

Due to the large number of children sick with the flu during the past week, the usual Christmas program will not be presented. Instead, a program of a patriotic nature will be given sometime in February.

Whitney Brothers’ tug and scow arrived in town last Thursday with a load of coal and oil for the Standard Oil Co.

Treat your radio to a new set of radio tubes. It must be working well for Christmas. G.M.L. & P. Co.
