An opportunity has come up for Cook County to apply for federal funding that could be used to build a 10-foot-wide path along the Gunflint Trail from the hospital corner to the Devil Track Lake Road (County Road 8). County Engineer Shae Kosmalski proposed the project to the county board Tuesday, saying the route would increase safety, provide transportation options for locals, and draw tourists wanting a scenic path along the Gunflint Trail. The path would be part of the road’s shoulder at the bottom, eventually veering off and running alongside the Gunflint Trail.

Candidates are being sought for a number of city boards and commissions for the City of Grand Marais, and the number of vacancies to be filled at the beginning of 2009 is greater than usual. The number of seats open is due to expiration of current terms, and residents who will have served the maximum number of years allowable in their positions at year’s end. In all, there are expected to be at least seven openings.

Nobody said it would be easy. It took coming back from a two-touchdown deficit and two overtime series, but the Cook County High School Vikings finally came out on top of the Adrian Dragons to capture the second Class A State Championship in as many years.

This year, Lutsen Mountains is celebrating its 50th year. Founded in 1948, Lutsen Mountains has expanded from a two-run recreation area to 66 ski runs on four sprawling mountains.

Minnesota’s firearms deer hunters enjoyed a safe and productive firearms deer season. DNR big game specialist Dave Schad said the outcome of the season was about what state wildlife managers expected. The buck harvest for Cook County, Beaver Bay and Finland was 433, up 48 percent from last year.

DEC. 5, 1968

Icy roads contributed to several accidents of Grand Marais people. Wreckers were busy in many localities.

The church in Hovland remains open to the passersby and visitors at all times. The members wish to keep this house of worship accessible to all, provided they are allowed to do so. They urge parents to instruct their children to play outside the building. Matches used by children are a fire hazard.

When returning from Duluth Sunday evening, the Herb Hedstroms were startled when the lights from a car ahead of them shone in all directions and the car slid off the road. But because of the icy condition the Hedstroms did not dare to stop.

90 YEARS AGO
DEC. 6, 1928

Alfred Brisson escaped injury the other day when the truck he was driving backed down hill out of his control and pitched sidewise, rolling over an embankment. The truck was headed for Hungry Jack Lake with a load of supplies, and when it reached the hill near Leo Lake, it was unable to make the grade in the newly fallen snow. The truck was quite badly wrecked, the cab being pierced by a stump on which it landed.

On Sunday night the Duluth bus slid off the road at Tofte and was detained for several hours. This is a very unusual thing as the buses are seldom late.

Russell Blankenburg was a caller in town on Friday. “Russ” drove down from his lodge at Gunflint Lake.

E.E. Luick made a trip to Isle Royale last week to repair the Passage Island light. He returned Wednesday after the damage had been repaired and the light restored.

Mrs. J.E. Spooner was in charge of Miss Miles’ classes during her absence.
