Lutsen Treasurer John Groth said in his monthly report at the Nov. 18 town board meeting that Lutsen was one of 11 Minnesota municipalities to receive a grant from the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants program. Groth, also a member of the Lutsen Fire Department, said the township will receive $10,213 toward the purchase of a thermal imaging camera. The township must provide a 5 percent match, which amounts to $575.
First-year motor cross racer Connor Smith, 14, of Grand Marais finished in 39th place out of 266 riders in the 250C class, earning a rank of 16th in the state. Connor took home second-, thirdand fourth-place trophies in five races at the Brookston race track. He said he plans to continue his motor cross racing.

Eight individuals, including three men and a woman from the North Shore, were indicted Nov. 18 by a federal grand jury on felony and misdemeanor Lacey Act charges. The individuals allegedly violated federal wildlife laws related to the illegal taking of bears and moose in Minnesota, and the unlawful interstate transportation of the illegal wildlife to Wisconsin. Their trial is expected to start within 70 days.
The construction of the new school and arts center is over budget by as much as $89,000, according to superintendent Dale Tormondsen. He told the school board that the general contractor has come up with an overbudget figure of $78,642. Also, Tormondsen told the board that the wood floor in the arts complex that was replaced due to persistent buckling is still problematic. Moisture problems appear to make it unlikely that a wood floor will ever work; carpeting seems to be the only option.

NOV. 28, 1968
Two men who were charged with burglarizing the Cook County courthouse and Northland Hardware store in Schroeder last month are in custody in Everett, Wash., also on a charge of burglary. The two had been out on $5,000 bail each awaiting trial in District Court here. They are also wanted in Duluth and Superior on similar charges.
It’s 35 years ago that Humphrey brothers Milford and Ed set up business in Grand Marais. The two Humphrey stores have become known all along the North Shore and are among the oldest businesses in Grand Marais. Although the flood of ’37, World War II, the draft and defense work all threatened the existence of the Humphrey business at intervals, there has been no interruption these 35 years.
Larry Yust, a Los Angeles movie director, visited Grand Marais last weekend to do some scouting for the planned production here of Jack London’s “To Build A Fire.” The classic, to be used in schools mainly, will be filmed here in February, providing there will be sufficient snow.

NOV. 29, 1928
The county bond election held last Saturday showed quite a lot of interest by the voters of the county, a good-sized vote being polled in all precincts. The vote was decidedly against the issuance of bonds.
C.O. Johnson has installed a kerosene pump at his store.
John W. Clark brought in a 34-pound trout, caught in Gunflint Lake near his place. Witnesses say that this is not a fish story.
Last week a bowling contest was held at A.P. Anderson’s bowling alley. Four turkeys were awarded as prizes to the winners. It is expected that a series of contests will be held during the winter months by way of amusement for the local bowlers.
