NOV. 15, 2008

More than 20 people attended a 1 percent lodging tax hearing Nov. 10 at the courthouse, and the board voted unanimously to approve the tax. Earlier this year the state legislature passed a bill authorizing Cook County to implement a countywide lodging tax to fund the Cook County Events and Visitors Bureau, organized in 2007 to increase tourism by promoting events in the offseason, October through May.

Gunnar Erickson was surprised by his friends and family with a party at the Grand Marais Municipal Swimming Pool on Nov. 10 – Gunnar’s 100th birthday! Gunnar comes to the pool bright and early every day, Monday through Friday, for a swim. Asked if the secret to a long life is swimming, Gunnar said no, it is just being happy.

NOV. 16, 1998

There’s still time for Cook County sausage connoisseurs to stop by the Cross River General Store in Schroeder before the store closes its doors for good. Bill Jordan, the eccentric sausage maker, is “almost positive” Beaver Bay will be the future site of his sausage business. However, fans of his 94 varieties may want to stock up just in case Jordan changes his mind. He admits he has toyed with the idea of retiring after MinnDOT purchased his general store.

With strong competition, the Satellite Café in Schroeder regained possession of the Grand Herring at the recent Cook County Historical Society Fish Cake Contest and Dinner. Satellite’s lost possession of the trophy last year to the East Bay Hotel and Restaurant.

50 YEARS AGO
NOV. 14, 1968

There’s a closed season on moose, but already six moose have been shot in Cook County by eager-beaver deer hunters, according to Earl Nelms, local game warden. One woman who shot a moose by mistake reported it immediately, but some did not, said Nelms. Anyone, of course, who shoots a moose may be subject to prosecution.

Merv’s Barber Shop has now been renamed Chuck’s Barber Shop.

Do turtles get around this time of year? Tracks discovered in a sandy road near Star of the North certainly resembled turtle tracks. Anyone got any answers?

90 YEARS AGO
NOV. 15, 1928

The State Forestry Department, under the supervision of District Ranger P.J. Bayle, is putting in a “headquarters” station just south of the Hovland town hall for the benefit of eastern Cook County, extending to Pigeon Point.

What this country needs is more wayside barbecue stands with “barbecue” spelled right.

A hunter from St. Paul was shot Tuesday near Grand Marais. He received a flesh wound across the buttox six inches long and two inches deep.

The fire alarm was sounded Sunday night when a truck in the Midway garage caught on fire. A can of gasoline, drained from the vacuum tank, was ignited which caused the trouble. No damage was done to the truck.

Last Friday a hunter at Hovland was accidentally shot. He stood on a stump and attempted to pull his gun after him. The weapon was discharged and his arm had to be amputated in consequence. Dr. F.B. Hicks attended to the surgery. We were unable to learn the man’s name.
