Homecoming royalty was named at Friday’s football game against the Carlton Bulldogs: Losha Senty was crowned king, and Marie Nordahl was named queen. The Vikings beat the Bulldogs 35-0, raising the home team’s record to 6-0.
It was a gorgeous day on the West End Saturday for the opening of the new exhibit, “Mapping the Schroeder Area History: More than 150 Years” at the Cross River Heritage Center. It was part of the larger celebration of “A Day of Traditions,” formerly John Schroeder Days, the big timber chaser for whom the town is named.

Grand Marais reached a Minnesota State Lottery milestone last month when the city’s total ticket sales topped $2 million since the lottery began in 1990. Thirty-five percent of the Minnesota cities that have lottery retailers have crossed that sales mark.
Property owners on two public roads were once again left without answers after a hearing last Tuesday before the county commissioners. Billed as a hearing to consider the request for county services on Brandon Lane and Birch Drive, the two-hour session consisted of a rehash of old arguments and little else.

The tragic death of a 64-year-old Hovland man at his home Monday shocked the entire community. In attempting to adjust the jacks used to move his house, he was accidentally crushed by the weight of the building. His wife was standing by helpless as it happened.
While putting up the ceiling in his new house, Bruce Kerfoot fell off a scaffolding, resulting in several torn ligaments and tendons in his right ankle.
The bald eagles are migrating and a 2-year-old eagle visited Star of the North. As bald eagles do not get their white heads and body marks until they are 3 years old, many are mistaken for large hawks and shot by careless hunters, which is causing a serious lessening of the bald eagles.

OCT. 11, 1928
County Commissioner Homer A. Massie is confined to his home with smallpox. This is the only case in the county, and it is not expected that the disease will spread as the people are quite generally vaccinated.
R.T. Krueger of the North Shore Hotel at Tofte wishes to thank the people of Grand Marais through the columns of this newspaper for the splendid cooperation given him since opening his hotel. The hotel will close on Saturday and Mr. and Mrs. Krueger will return to Minneapolis for the winter.
