There is just too much risk for the EDA to go forward with the Sawtooth Cottages development project in Grand Marais. After months of indecision and attempts to find some way of lessening the risk to the EDA, the board at Tuesday’s meeting decided to hold off on any development of the land for now.

The Cook County Middle School Knowledge Bowl team tied for first place out of 24 teams at the regional meet in Mt. Iron.

Northern Light Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 292, which has been active for over 80 years, voted at its last meeting to consolidate with its “mother chapter” in Two Harbors. Falling membership, officers unwilling to continue in offices held for many years and lack of new members were some of the reasons the unit can no longer be active.

OCT. 5, 1998

The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the National Park Service have reached an historic agreement by which the band will assist with the operations of Grand Portage National Monument. Beginning Nov. 15, 1998, the Grand Portage Band will be in charge of all maintenance work at the monument, becoming a fundamental partner in management of the facility.

A Duluth man pled guilty last week in federal court to cutting and removing timber from Superior National Forest in Lake County in March 1998. Magistrate Judge Erickson sentenced Thomas Bildeaux to fines of $3,165 for cutting timber and $3,165 for removal of timber.

OCT. 3, 1968

Mrs. Parke D. Robinson will give an account of the Seattle Doll Convention she attended this summer at the annual Cook County Historical Society meeting at the courthouse this evening at 7:30.

Between 40,000 and 50,000 coho salmon were “planted” in Greenwood Lake last Thursday. The fish were from 4 to 6 inches in length. These trout grow remarkably fast and should make Greenwood one of the best sports fishing lakes in the area if they thrive.

A defective refrigerator motor filled the Marvin Phillips basement full of smoke last week. Lyle, coming home after his parents had gone to bed, roused them and reported smelling smoke. The smudge never burst into flame, but the smell permeated the house.

Ted Linnell of Mineral Center was doing some church business in this village Tuesday.

The first shipment of cement and lumber arrived today for the new Coast Guard station. Mr. Nunstedt is getting everything on the ground, and is now waiting for word to start work. The government will have a man on the ground as inspector.

Keo. C. Newton, civil and mining engineer of Michigan, was here yesterday on his way to Port Arthur. The Pigeon River Lumber Company has a preliminary permit to improve six water power projects on the Pigeon River, and Mr. Newton is interested in seeing that the work be done. Pending legislation may prevent the work from being done.
