The Cook County commissioners voted 5-0 Tuesday to deny a rezoning request for a 5.4-acre parcel on Sag Lake at the end of the Gunflint Trail. The vote occurred quickly, and with little discussion among the board following about an hour’s worth of public comment.

Three months after a historic six-inch rainfall caused widespread damage throughout the county, Grand Marais officials are still seeking a solution for problems caused by excessive runoff in the city’s west end. A Monson semi-trailer truck careened into a ditch on the high side of Highway 61 just over the county line in Lake County on Friday, totaling the rig but leaving the young truck driver with only bruised legs. The Thunder Bay driver, according to the Highway Patrol, went into the ditch shortly after 7 a.m. with a cargo of 52 rolls of paper each weighing 900 pounds. The gigantic rolls shifted violently upon impact, and were visible to passing motorists after the skin of the trailer was peeled back.
