Authors John Henrickson and Howard Sivertson will be the featured writers on WDSE’s Venture North Northwoods Reader in November. Both men recently had new books published and they talked to the show’s host at Betsy Bowen’s Studio on Tuesday.

The Grand Marais- Cook County Economic Development Authority will have $140,566 to operate with next year – about $30,000 less than the agency requested from the county board. The EDA’s request was for $170,260, or $35,000 more than the $135,290 received through county taxes this year. The county commissioners said they were reluctant to grant such a big increase, especially since other county departments were asked to hold their requests to a zero percent increase, and the county itself is under state mandate to cap its levy increase at 3.9 percent.

Raiders come in the night and bears have big appetites – but oh, if they would not destroy the trees. A huge bear climbed Anton Arnquist’s prize apple tree the other night and had himself a ball. Bruin was heavy and branches were broken, but the apples are gone. Anton has six more trees and is quite worried about them now.

The local Curling Club is assured of artificial ice for their rinks this winter, following approval of a $27,000 FHA loan which had been applied for earlier. The loan will cover cost of most of the needed equipment, but there will be some additional volunteer help also. The new equipment will greatly improve the curling here and will provide better and longer-lasting ice.

Nearly $14,000 has been spent so far this year repairing vandalism damage, replacing stolen signs and cleaning up campgrounds in state forests, the Minnesota Conservation Department reported. Recently four persons were arrested near Silver Bay after they were seen stealing signs from the Eckbeck campground in Finland State Forest. They were taken to Two Harbors where they posted bail of $33. Bail was forfeited when they failed to appear in court.
