The Cook County Vikings got off to a good start with a 26-0 win in their first game of the season. Cook County’s defense was relentless as they only allowed 58 yards of total offense by the Ely Timberwolves.

Junior wideout James Groth caught three touchdown passes that totaled 140 yards of offense.

WTIP will host a music festival this weekend to celebrate its 10th anniversary and to thank the community for its support. The all-day festival begins at 10 a.m. at Sweetheart’s Bluff in the Rec Park and will feature lots of music performed by local groups.

SEPT. 7, 1998

Tim Kennedy, who serves as both planning and zoning administrator and the county solid waste officer, tendered his resignation at a special meeting of the county board of commissioners. The meeting was called to review the county budget and levy requests, but Kennedy’s news led the agenda. Kennedy told the board he was resigning to pursue family business opportunities.

With just a week before the county commissioners must vote on the maximum levy they will send to the state of Minnesota, severe paring of Cook County’s bottom line for the year 1999 is on the board’s next meeting agenda. With all the department budgets in, and despite instructions from the county auditor to submit “zero increases” in budgets, the 1999 proposed levy requests are twice what the state will allow.

50 YEARS AGO
SEPT. 5, 1968

Two local girls, ages 12 and 13, were in a Duluth hospital following an accident at Devil Track Lake early Monday morning.

The two girls had decided to sleep in the family boat tied to shore while their parents slept in the cabin. About 2 a.m. something happened to the gas lantern used to keep the chill out of the boat cabin. It exploded and spewed flames and fumes into the boat.

The Gunflint Trail from Hedstrom’s to South Brule has now been blacktopped and is in excellent condition.

At Loon Lake the guests are catching both bass and walleyes. Although not record-breakers, they have given the guests considerable action.

90 YEARS AGO
SEPT. 6, 1928

A Canadian game warden by the name of George Johnston was drowned in Gunflint Lake today. The accident happened when a canoe capsized in which he and another warden were paddling.

Mrs. Emil Hall has demonstrated her skill as a fisherwoman by landing an 11-pound trout, which she caught in Lake Superior Wednesday morning

Mrs. Babb caught one of the fingers of her right hand in a car door last week, breaking the finger. It is improving rapidly, she said.

It is necessary to have a hunting license to hunt bear, which costs $2. Please bear this in mind.
