A long talked-about project to convert the First Baptist Church into affordable housing units has been put on hold. City councilors were informed last week that the agency which has been devising plans to convert the building into an affordable housing complex is now considering an outright sale to Cook County Higher Ed. The church building on West Third Street will be vacated later this year when the congregation moves into its new quarters in the business park.
The Grand Marais city burn pile went up in flames last Wednesday. Firefighters from Grand Marais, the USFS, Gunflint Trail and Colvill kept water on the pile and the fire out of the woods. A week later the exact cause is still anyone’s guess.

The hot, dry conditions Cook County has experienced for the past month combined with some severe lightning on Sunday, resulted in a number of small wildfires in the Esther Lake area. As of Tuesday, four fires had been spotted in the vicinity, none of which burned more than one acre and all of which were under control.
The new courthouse addition and remodeling expense sheet shows that $325,088 has been spent on furniture. “What happened to all the old furniture?” was a question asked to the county board. County Auditor Carol Gresczyk said furniture that could not be used was given away to various public agencies and nonprofits around town. Gresczyk said an itemized list would be provided for those who are interested.

Border Patrol officers here say that Michael McMullen, from Onamia, the young man who disappeared from here last summer, has not been found. An Immigration inspector said that handwriting samples indicate that the young man recently seen here is not the man hunted. McMullen may be suffering from amnesia due to a slight head injury earlier in life. He is not a criminal and no warrants have been issued by authorities.
The underground telephone cable has not given the results that were hoped for. The trouble has kept the telephone company on a continual repair cycle and the telephone users out of service days at a stretch. The trouble seemingly was caused by spring rock-heaving which mashed the line in innumerable spots with weird results.

AUG. 23, 1928
Mrs. C.W. Williams, prominent Duluth club woman, was almost instantly killed at 8:30 yesterday morning when an automobile her husband was driving on the North Shore skidded into the ditch about 12 miles northeast of Two Harbors. Mr. Williams suffered serious face cuts and internal injuries and is at the Burns-Christianson hospital at Two Harbors.
Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Johnson and daughter Audrey, former residents of this village, are now in Marshfield, Mo., where Mr. Johnson has charge of a construction job. Miss Johnson is employed as a typist there.
Miss Helen Zerbach was confined to her home a few days this week on account of illness.
