After a short break, the Hoopin’ in the Harbor 3-on-3 basketball tournament returned to Grand Marais with a successful showing. Fifteen teams in three different divisions signed up for the Saturday morning affair that took place during Fisherman’s Picnic.
The July 30 meeting of the Grand Marais City Council began with the presentation of a petition asking for adoption of an ordinance regulating noise, particularly outdoor music. The petition was given to council by Norm Larsen, a seasonal resident of the city’s Rec Park. Larsen said the campground’s rules call for “quiet time” beginning at 10 p.m., and it is only fair that others observe the same policy.

A reunion of the Warren and Champney families occurred over the July 4th weekend at Bruce and Sue Kerfoot’s Gunflint Lodge. Thirty-four members of the two families traveled to Gunflint Lake from seven states and Australia to celebrate with a special dinner in honor of Betty Champney’s 80th birthday.
Ten vehicular breakins were reported within the Grand Marais city limits between July 7 and 9, and Sheriff Dave Wirt is warning residents and visitors to lock their vehicles. At least eight cars had been invaded in the parking lot of a local apartment complex, with items stolen ranging from loose change and sunglasses to cellular phones, wallets and even siphoned gas. A few of the stolen items were found and returned, but the majority of the items are still missing.

Penny Drowley left her Shetland pony with the McClanahans when she and her parents were here from Silver Bay. She now has a dog named Rusty.
Tony Tabbery, who works for McGearry’s, lost his wallet last week and hopes the finder will return his identification cards.
Ted Blaisdell, Two Harbors, will be the caller at the next square dance at Colvill on Saturday. This is a community endeavor to try to interest couples in the fun of square dancing.

Sam Zimmerman of International Falls, not our Sam Zimmerman, is alleged to have been in possession of some Canadian whiskey. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Zimmerman Jr. returned today from North Dakota, and wherever Sam went, his friends accosted him with the query, “When did you break out of jail?” The International Falls Sam Zimmerman is wanted.
The steamship Huronic went aground on Gull Rock on Lucille Island on Monday morning in a fog about 4 o’clock. The crash threw passengers from their beds. All were ordered to immediately don life preservers and stand by the lifeboats in case an emergency landing was required. However, there was no disorder following the crash. Passengers remained aboard until Monday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Anderson and friends cooked fish on the lake shore Saturday, and enjoyed a sumptuous repast in the open.
Perry Hoeffler arrived in Grand Marais this week from Illinois where he is associated with his father in operating several theaters. He is spending the vacation with his parents at the Hoeffler cabin.
