Cook County officials should know within three weeks if the county will qualify for federal aid to repair its storm-damaged roads and infrastructure. That was the message delivered to the county board by FEMA agents who were visiting the county to assess damage from the June 6 rainstorm. If the funds are received, they would be used to repair local roads; repairs to state-aid roads have already qualified for state assistance through its Disaster Relief Fund.

The Grand Marais Arts Festival was a great success last weekend despite gusty winds. All but one of the tents survived the winds with minimal breakage. There was plenty to see and large crowds to see it as well as good food and music.

JULY 20, 1998

Nadine Blacklock, 44, famed photographer of the North Shore and woodlands, died shortly after a head-on collision with another vehicle on July 5 on Highway 61 near Split Rock Lighthouse.

A life-size puppet of Helmer Aakvik is the lead character in “I Sat Smiling,” to be performed Aug. 1 at North House Folk School. Puppeteer Jim Ouray is a Cook County cabin owner who is captivated by Aakvik’s story, and he built the show around his life story with the puppet and numerous landscape watercolors which depict moments in Aakvik’s long life.

JULY 18, 1968

Two Schroeder girls and two young men from Two Harbors died of injuries received in a one-car accident on Highway 61 near Baptism River last Saturday morning. Two others survived. Officials said the eastbound car failed to make a turn just west of Baptism River bridge. It plowed into a stand of trees, breaking them off as it went. The engine of the 1965 model car was thrown 80 feet from the car; the car was a twisted, crumpled wreck.

Theft of an undetermined amount of money taken at Wally’s Service Station Saturday night was reported.

Five redwood planters filled with six dozen petunia plants have been added to the Bear Tree Park beautifications. Grand Marais Garden Club members planted these. They had to put additional soil around the flowers at the fountain for the spray from the fountain washes over the plants. A few plants have been completely washed away.

JULY 19, 1928

There is propaganda or misinformation being circulated in Duluth, according to our informants, that the road to Grand Marais is in an impassable condition on this end. This is a gross error and an injustice to the motorist desiring to come here as well as to the people of this village and beyond.

Hedstrom’s truck was run in the pond Wednesday morning. It was pulled out by the wrecker.

The Grand Opening of the Colvill Town Hall last Saturday night was a huge success. Mr. Tracy from Minneapolis made the dedicating talk, praising the people of Colvill for their fire hall, and the cooperating spirit with which they worked to make their community a better place to live.
