Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and family made a surprise visit to Grand Marais last Friday. It was something of a work vacation for the governor, who was in northern Minnesota touring storm damage, the dedication at the Taconite Ridge Energy Center, and some other stops.
Local Girl Scout troops hosted a party at the Community Center to thank the community for helping make the girls’ June 7-14 Washington, D.C. trip a reality. Each of the participants will showcase a part of the D.C. trip at the party. The trip was the culmination of over 12 months of fundraising efforts that included food and craft booths, pop can recycling, grant applications and a host of other activities.

Two women, two art forms, seven years and 600,000 stitches are reflected in the 10-foot-long tapestry on display at Johnson Heritage Post for the balance of this week. Maple Hill resident Jean Husby and her daughter-in-law Barbara Meier-Husby of Washington, D.C., have created the unique project. Husby worked in needlepoint wool and Meier- Husby worked in water color.
The Cook County Historical Society has received a donation of $300 for St. Francis Xavier Church, more commonly known as Chippewa City Church. The money will be used to begin replacing the church windows with more historically accurate glass panes. The windows had been replaced with plastic panes over 20 years ago to help prevent vandalism.

The summer recreation program gets under way Monday, June 24. According to Stanley Hedstrom, recreation director, 70 children have signed up for the program and 60 for the swimming lessons.
Parke Robinson has been very busy searching for volunteers to assist in keeping our Cook County Historical Museum open for tourists and visitors in our area. This is very important because the Historical Museum is a big asset to the county.
Robert Jones, formerly of Tofte, has accepted a position with the Carnation Can Co. with the technical service department in Oconomowoc, Wis.
90 YEARS AGO
JUNE 21, 1928
Cascade Lodge opened for business June 10th, having acquired a chef from the Hotel St. Frances, St. Paul. They are prepared to take care of the public in big city style. They will be very pleased to meet any friends that may care to call. Charles Rogers will be on hand to meet you with a smile and see that every one of your wants are attended to.
Ethel Wahlstrom returned one day last week from Minneapolis where she has been in training for the last three years. She is now a graduate nurse.
Mr. Reynold Lund, a former pastor of the Baptist church, stayed over and held a service at Grand Marais.
Al Rude was detained from work one day last week on account of illness.
