Cook County Highway Engineer Shae Kosmalski said Tuesday efforts to open and repair storm-damaged roads are moving along as well as can be expected, and was authorized to impose weight restrictions on at least a half-dozen roads. Kosmalski reported to the county board that she was still in the process of assessing the damage caused by last Friday’s rainstorm, and said every county road had at least one passable lane, or one end open to traffic. She still hopes to be able to access state Disaster Aid money. More than 3 inches of rain fell in Grand Marais on June 5-6.
The county board agreed to allot $15,000 as matching funds for a Blandin grant to pursue a fiber optics broadband project in the county. The money will be used for a feasibility study to get tangible numbers for the project, which will enable telecommuting employment opportunities.

Pat Shunn has a 2-yearold calf that is following her from county parking lot to government lot. It has a tiny set of horns started and is afraid of no one whether it be dogs or people. It has attracted people who are coming and going to Saganaga. It stands and has its picture taken with any person available. The parking lots are loaded.
Mark Hansen and Tom Healy approached the city council at its regular meeting on June 10 with some ideas for changes to the lease agreement between the North House Folk School and the city of Grand Marais. In a formal request, they asked for two changes to the current lease: that campus development and capital improvement be accepted in lieu of monthly rent payments; and that the lease be extended to five years (the current one-year lease extends only until the end of June). Council approved the changes by unanimous vote.
