More than 30 people brought 2,137 pounds of personal papers to Grand Marais State Bank’s parking lot to be shredded by a bonded shredding company. The bank, which offers the service for free, also took in 500 pounds of papers in Tofte. Eric Kemp was sworn in as the new school board member at ISD 166’s board meeting May 20. With regrets, Grand Marais City Council accepted the resignation of parks manager Chuck Carbert, who has accepted a similar position in Nebraska.

The job opening will be advertised immediately.

MAY 25, 1998

A rapid and effective air attack of a forest fire discovered north of Hovland May 19 suppressed a blaze that could have threatened cabins and homes in the vicinity of Tom Lake.

With strong, dry, northwest winds, the fire, estimated at 40 acres, spread rapidly to the east. Air support came from Grand Marais, Ely and Ontario.

A new piano was delivered to the Arrowhead Center for the Arts on May 19.

The new piano is an American-made, seven-foot Conover grand, the high-end instrument built by the Cable Company.

It was originally built in 1936, but has been totally rebuilt and is purported to “have the same quality it had in 1936.”

Total cost of the piano was $13,000.

MAY 23, 1968

A 6-year-old Grand Portage boy lost his life in Lake Superior Sunday evening when he fell from the main dock there. He had been playing about the dock where his father was readying the Sivertson boat for the summer run to Isle Royale.

No one saw the boy fall into the water. An injury to the head led to the possibility that he may have struck his head in falling. He was in the water but a short time before his father found him.

The Voyage-Air Flight Line will start a year-round scheduled service from Duluth to Grand Marais, with an intermediate stop at the Tofte air strip on June 15.

Two four place Beechcraft Bonanzas with a cruising speed of 180 mph will be used to start the twice daily service. One or two planes will be flown on each flight as needed. Each plan will carry three passengers plus 300 pounds of baggage.

MAY 24, 1928

Emil Hall is installing a Fairbanks Morris system in Greenwood Lodge.

Persons are warned to keep off the grass at the grounds of the Masonic Temple. Boys who have been playing there are hereafter forbidden to hold their games on those grounds.

John Loh of Onion River is having a basement put under his home.
