Following an hour-long discussion, the county board voted 3-2 Tuesday to support a resolution designating some existing hiking trails as part of the North Country National Scenic Trail. The proposal was made by a delegation from the Superior Hiking Trail Association, the Forest Service and National Park Service. The designation will cause no changes, other than to allow the association to access federal funds for the maintenance of the trail system.

Harbor Friends will host two activities at the Grand Marais harbor on Saturday. The first is a “Harbor Sweep” beach cleanup, covering the area from Artist’s Point to the Rec Park. Following that, Harbor Friends will cut the ribbon on the new Sweetheart’s Bluff Lake Loop Trail at the west end of the Rec Park campground.

MAY 18, 1998

Charlie Rude of Grand Marais has been named to Team Minnesota AAA hockey’s traveling team as a defenseman. The traveling team features some of the best young players in the state. They will represent Minnesota in competition July 1-4 in Winnipeg. The team will then return to the Twin Cities for practice and the International Festival in Minneapolis July 25-Aug. 2. Rude travels to Edina next month where he will practice with the team and live for the duration of the AAA program.

Three members of the West End Garden Club hiked the Oberg Mountain trail last week. They report that there is a profusion of blooming wildflowers on the mountain and along the trail.

County Commissioner Jim Hall was presented a cake at a recent county board meeting in honor of his 65th birthday.

50 YEARS AGO
MAY 16, 1968

Construction of a new office at the Tofte Ranger Station is now in progress. The new office will be located adjacent to the North Shore Drive in front of the existing office.

The annual CCHS Junior- Senior banquet and prom will be held Saturday starting with the banquet to be held at Lutsen Resort and followed by the prom, held in the high school gym. Harry Drabik, English instructor at Cook County High School, will be the guest speaker at the banquet.

Fire in a trailer brought the village fire truck to the scene Monday about 4 p.m. and just as quickly the fire was put out and the vacationers were on their way to Duluth.

90 YEARS AGO
MAY 17, 1928

Last Sunday Andrew Tofte and his son Seymour went out to take in their nets in a badly leaking rowboat. Just how badly it leaked, however, they did not discover until water began pouring in from large cracks in the sides. Both men called loudly for help. A rescuing party started out from shore while their rowboat was slowly filling, and when they were rescued they were found sitting waist-deep in water.

If you plan on coming to Cook County soon and are holding back because you are afraid of bad roads, banish your fears. We had no trouble this spring, and right now the roads are in perfect condition all the way from Duluth up to Grand Marais and on to Fort William and Port Arthur, Canada.

Miss Lillian Lindskog cut her hand very badly on a milk bottle one day last week.

Joe Johnson is repairing his store building.
