The Gunflint Green Up may well go down in Cook County history as one of the most extraordinary community events ever. The Colvill Volunteer Fire Department asked for and received a 25-year non-interest loan for $82,970 from the county at the April 28 meeting of the board of commissioners. The money will be used to put a triple-bay fire hall on a slab and wire it for electricity. The loan will be repaid out of tax money collected from the special taxing district created by the county last year.

After high hopes this winter that the county resorts could attract enough air traffic for a charter air service, airport administrator Karen Blackburn regretfully told the county commissioners last week that the idea was on hold for a year. Blackburn said a year is needed to get the full participation of all the resorts, adding that the Gunflint Trail Association has been the group most willing to sell charter tickets as part of a package.
