The Border Patrol in Grand Marais won’t be getting a new building anytime soon. In fact, the General Services Administration announced Tuesday that the solicitation for plans to build the structure has been cancelled. Instead, the Border Patrol will use a satellite facility at the Coast Guard Station for its administrative offices while retaining the old facility on Highway 61.

Cook and Lake counties were awarded $671,576 in the form of a Small Cities Development Program grant. The money will be used for rehabilitation and assessment abatement in both counties. The application was one of 40 out of 85 that received the requested awards. Cook County will receive about $450,000 of the award for use in assessment abatement for 12 households and about $70,000 for housing rehabilitation. The remainder of the funds will go to Lake County.

APRIL 13, 1998

Since last April, a group of dedicated parents led by Stephanee Everson and Bridget Sobieck has raised $30,000 to buy new playground equipment for Sawtooth Elementary School. Even more amazing is the fact that $10,000 was raised in the past two months. “We have all the money for the equipment now,” Everson said. “We still need to come up with about $500 for things like wood chips for ground cover and cement for the footings.”

The Cook County Community Center has received a $46,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Children, Families & Learning with another $20,000 from Cook County to upgrade the 4H log building. Traditionally, women are not usually connected with carpentry or home renovation, and so a unique portion of this grant provides an opportunity for young women ages 16-22 to explore this field through a hands-on apprenticeship program.

50 YEARS AGO
APRIL 11, 1968

Foundation work has been completed and construction continues on the new Standard Oil Service station building on the bay front. It is hoped that the construction will be completed by June 1. The building will be located nearer the harbor than the old one and will be twice as large. Local manager is Gene Erickson.

Pius J. Lacher of St. Paul is the new superintendent of schools for the Cook County school system.

The “Agg Sexa,” which is a Swedish pre-Easter party, was enjoyed by the members of the Hovland Community Club Saturday night.

A group of four people hiked into Gillis Lake from Tuscarora Lodge for a five-day camping trip on Saturday morning. They had been warned in advance of the ice conditions and are hopefully taking the necessary precautions.

90 YEARS AGO
APRIL 12, 1928

Sunday at 1 p.m. fire was discovered in the Boisvert barber shop in the Ficklin building, across the street from the Motor Inn. The firemen did good work and extinguished the flames, but only after the building and contents were practically destroyed. Although the whole place was flooded with water, much credit is due the chemical which smothered the flames. Insurance on the building amounted to $1,200.

Warning – Boys are warned to keep off the lookout tower and any person climbing the ladder does so at his own risk.

Andrew Hedstrom is confined to his home with the flu.

Miss Ida Johnson left for Milwaukee Tuesday morning, where she will take a course in telegraphy.

Morris Olson and Alfred Sonju are erecting a new garage in Two Harbors on the site of the old Lawrence store. It has a lot of floor space. It will be ready for occupancy by the middle of next month.
