In a unanimous vote, the ISD 166 school board voted to cut the budget by $335,000 at its regular meeting on Monday. The vote was passed with little discussion. Last week, the board meeting as a finance committee of the whole, came to a consensus decision about the cuts. Cuts will be made throughout the school district, but with little impact on the quality of education, board members said. Implementation will begin immediately.
Jessica Berg-Coleman, 11, won the Mush for a Cure on Saturday, raising more than $3,000 in pledges for the Breast Cancer Foundation. The second annual event featured 20 mushers jumping out of their sleeping bags on Gunflint Lake and frantically hitching up their dog teams to race across the ice.

In a split decision, the Cook County Board of Commissioners voted on March 17 to approve the amended Law Enforcement Services contract between the county and city of Grand Marais. The contract specifies that the city will pay $140,000 a year to the county for an average of 5,824 hours of daily patrol service within the city. The contract was accepted several weeks ago by the county board but was before them again with an amendment that made it clear that the city was still obligated to pay its share of construction costs for the new Law Enforcement Center.
Joe Deschampe from Grand Portage recently visited with state Sen. Doug Johnson at the state capitol in St. Paul. Deschampe, a Cook County High School student, was among 35 American Indian students representing all 11 Minnesota tribes and reservations who participated in a unique seminar at the capitol, where they learned about state and tribal governments.

The Boy Scout program has been dropped for lack of interest. This does not affect the Cub Scout program, which is quite active.
Monday night was work night at the Village Library. With the newly introduced Arrowhead Library System and all the new books being added to the collection, the new shelving is being put to good use, and the entire collection has been re-arranged.
The Cook County Civil Defense staff met in the courthouse March 15. A resume of the year’s activities and projects was discussed including subjects such as Shelter Managers Course, School Civil Defense Activities, Economic Stabilization, Medical Self-Help and Mortuary Services.

The town of Lutsen is to have a firefighting organization, which will start functioning this spring. It will help to keep green the stretch of virgin timber skirting the shoreline between Cascade and Lutsen. The people of Lutsen should be complimented on the stand they have taken and other towns should follow in their footsteps.
The Baptist church has a new pulpit, installed this week.
The Lakeview Dairy added another cow to its herd this week.
Arthur Johnson, game supervisor, returned Saturday from a week in the vicinity of Gunflint Lake. Upon his return he was suffering from a severe case of snow blindness. He has now recovered.
Peter LaPlante was in from the woods with a shipment of furs Monday. He has caught six fishers this season.
Scott Brothers will finish their logging and will break camp about the end of this week.
