A decision on establishing a special taxing district for property owners in the Poplar River watershed was delayed indefinitely Tuesday when the county board voted to seek more public input in the process before moving forward.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to revise the amount of critical habitat designated under the Endangered Species Act for the federally threatened Canada lynx. In total, the Service is proposing to designate 42,753 square miles of habitat throughout the country. In Minnesota, about 8,226 square miles are proposed in portions of Cook, Koochiching, Lake and St. Louis counties and the Superior National Forest.

MARCH 16, 1998

The four-way race for a position on Lutsen’s board of supervisors brought out a record number of voters. Alta McQuatters was reelected as town clerk. Brad Ludlow was successful in his bid for supervisor, winning over incumbent Spencer Motschenbacher and challengers Sandy Furlow and Russell Ross. In all, 85 voters visited the polls and attended the annual meeting.

The City of Grand Marais received good news last week concerning the $300,000 Intermodal Surface Transportation Act grant applied for in December 1997. The Grand Marais project, a multi-use trail from Eighth Avenue to what will be the new Gunnflint Trail, has been selected as the number one priority for funding, meaning the city will receive $300,000 on a $60,000 investment. This is the first such a grant was ever awarded to Cook County.

MARCH 14, 1968

Emerson Morris, county sheriff, appeared on a six-county sheriff ’s panel televised over WDSE-TV educational channel Wednesday evening. The program is part of a “Know Your Government” series.

The first chipmunk of 1968 was sighted on Monday. Maybe that’s a sign of spring?

John Twiest reports that a timber wolf came right down to his building in broad daylight the other day. He said that in the 20 years in their home on the Colvill Road he had never heard the wolves howl like they do this year. Now it’s every night!

An increasing number of women in Cook County have been entering the labor force in recent years. The latest figures indicate that no less than 41 percent of the local female population over the age of 14 are now employed outside the home or are looking for such employment. By way of comparison, as recently as 1960 the percentage was 38 percent. The census taken at that time showed a total of 403 local women in the labor force.

MARCH 15, 1928

Harry Hummitch was in town from eastern Cook County Monday.

The county board met this month on Wednesday following election day. By action of the board the Town of Hovland was dissolved. An attempt will probably be made by some of the citizens of the town to have the organization reinstated.

Several members of the Engelson family of Tofte were in town Monday night to attend the meeting of the Star Lodge, a class of seven being initiated.
