A house at 41 Rosebush Lane was destroyed by fire early Monday morning. No one was at the vacation home at the time, and the cause has not been determined.

Three months after considering the purchase of a privately owned downtown lot for construction of a new public library, Grand Marais city councilors withdrew their offer Feb. 27. The unanimous vote leaves library officials essentially back where they started over a year ago, when they began exploring options for either expansion of the existing library building, or construction of a new facility.

MARCH 9, 1998

The Grand Marais power substation could be relocated before next winter, according to Public Utilities Director Russell Good. Steps are being taken to examine the overloaded station and its probable relocation. The station is currently working at a level above its capacity, and although the station can safely work at 25 percent over its rating, some of the power lines in town are becoming overloaded. The goal of the new substation is to raise the voltage for the city, as higher voltage results in lower amperage.

Organizers of the 8th annual Flute Reed Challenge children’s sled dog race cancelled the event last weekend citing safety concerns for the participants. The lack of consistent snow coverage posed significant danger to the young mushers and dogs.

MARCH 7, 1968

A series of films not usually seen in theaters or on TV will be shown at the Cook County High School, sponsored by “Film Society,” if plans work out. The project is described as an effort to acquaint people with foreign films.

Willard Nelson, a former resident of Lutsen, has been named national field sales manager by Fiat- Roosevelt Motors, sole U.S. importers/distributors of the Italian-made Fiat automobile.

Mr. and Mrs. Dave Debeltz, formerly of Ely, purchased Merv’s Barber Shop and Bernice’s Beauty Shop and took over ownership last Friday. With the Debeltzes is Chuck Petek, also formerly of Ely, who is employed by the new owners in charge of the barber shop.

MARCH 8, 1928

Capt. J.F. Johns came up from Duluth yesterday on his way to Hollow Rock to put up ice for use in the coming season.

Sam Linnell is having some repair work done on the interior of his cabin at Mineral Center.

The county Farm Bureau has obtained the loan of the six-reel motion picture “The Romance of Sleepy Valley.” Communities which would like to see this very interesting film story can make arrangements with the county agent for showings during the period of the loan, March 8-31.

Gust Anderson disposed of his cow last week to a Duluth truck driver.

The men of the Congregational church will serve pancakes and sausages in the church basement next Thursday night. Victor Johnson will make the cakes.
