Cook County Commissioner Jim Johnson said Tuesday it’s time for the county to look into the cause of – and inability to fix – ongoing telephone problems on the Gunflint Trail. “It’s very, very serious. It’s a matter of safety, and it affects a lot of people who are trying to run businesses,” said Johnson, who represents the district. The Trail has had phone outages on seven or eight occasions since the beginning of the year – including one that lasted a couple days.

Grand Marais city councilors took the first step toward regulating dangerous and potentially dangerous dogs last Wednesday by approving a draft ordinance that stiffens the penalty for both offending owners and their dogs.

My Sister’s Place, a new restaurant in Grand Marais that features an assortment of hamburgers, sandwiches and beverages, opened Feb. 15.

Jana Larson, a resident of Lutsen and teacher at Sawtooth Elementary School in Grand Marais, is among a select group of outstanding educators chosen to participate in the Minnesota Humanities Commission’s Teacher Institute during the week of March 1-6. The program will be held at the Humanities Education Center, a newly-opened conference center in St. Paul.

FEB. 22, 1968

There are 28 wolves and between 600 and 750 moose on Isle Royale, according to Newton Sikes, National Park Service ranger, who has just returned from the 50-mile-long island.

Pvt. Clarence Everson has been transferred and is now stationed in Anchorage, Alaska.

90 YEARS AGO
FEB. 23, 1928

On Tuesday evening about 8 o’clock the fire whistle blew, a Chippewa City blaze illuminating the sky. The Drouillard house, where Mrs. Drouillard, her daughter Rosie and husband lived. The fire brigade with its apparatus made the run to the fire but the structure was ready to collapse before help arrived. The building was a total loss.

Purchase of 19,994 acres of land in Cook, Lake and St. Louis counties at an average price of $1.62 an acre, as an addition to Superior National Forest, was announced in Washington Monday by the National Forestry Commission. The purchase was the first to be authorized under the $40 million allocated for this purpose. The commission indicated that total purchases in northwestern states would include about 1,100,000 acres of forest land.

William Shugard received a sentence of 60 days in the county jail for having venison in his possession.
