Suggestions for possible budget cuts ISD 166 could make to avoid falling into statutory operating debt in FY2009 were presented to the school board at its regular meeting Monday night. The proposed reductions, which totaled $584,000, covered every aspect of school life, from administrative salary cuts to reduction in staff at Sawtooth Elementary School. “We can still provide a good education,” Superintendent Chuck Futterer told the school board. “We’ll just have to do it with fewer resources.”
High winds in sub-zero temperatures on Saturday night downed a tall spruce tree in Cascade State Park, pulling a transmission line to the ground and cutting off power to the county for more than three hours.

Colvill musher Mark Dunlap won third place in the Grand Casino Hinckley 1998 Great Trail Sled Dog Race in the six-dog pro class last weekend.
Soon it could be as quick and easy to get to Cook County, or out of it, as it is to go to any sizable community in the country. Air shuttle service from Twin Cities International Airport to Grand Marais is coming. At the Feb. 10 county board meeting, airport administrator Karen Blackburn announced the start this summer of the new air service. “We need to fill the seats this summer or we’ll lose the service,” Blackburn told the board.

FEB. 15, 1968
Mrs. Mary Rex, believed to have been the oldest resident of Cook County, died Saturday at the North Shore Hospital. She attained the age of 100 last May 15, when a special birthday gathering was held for her at the East Bay Hotel. Mrs. Rex was familiarly known as “Grandma Rex” and had been in the local hospital since last November.
There’s a rather lengthy legal in small print published on page 5 of this issue, and it concerns everyone in the Village of Grand Marais. It has to do with dirt, rubbish, snow, trees, sidewalks and many other things and what is to be done or not done with them. It would be a good idea for everyone to become acquainted with this new ordinance which is in effect as of today.

FEB. 16, 1928
The House today approved an item in the Treasury Appropriation Bill, making available $54,175 to construct a Coast Guard station at Grand Marais, which was authorized by act of Congress June 6, 1920. This is the only life-saving station in the United States for which appropriation is made for fiscal year ending in 1929. It is hoped to have the station constructed this year.
The class play “Applesauce,” given by the Junior class last Friday evening, was a big success. A full house was present to hear and enjoy the production.
Clarence M. Hillman of the Two Harbors Chronicle has been chosen as president of the Northern Minnesota Editorial Association at the annual meeting in St. Cloud last week.
