Birch Grove Community School celebrated two milestones this week – and the Minnesota Commissioner of Education was part of it. Commissioner Alice Seagren presented the school with its first Q-Comp check for more than $12,480 – the first installment in a comprehensive program to improve reading and teacher skills at Birch Grove. Seagren then joined students for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new timber frame outdoor classroom in the woods behind the school.

State Representative Tom Bakk said last week that he will sit on the bill to phase out motors on the Boundary Waters portion of Seagull Lake. Introduced on the last day of the 1997 session, the Morse Bill would nail the lid shut on hopes Seagull Lake property owners have that motors could continue to be used on a large part of their lake. There is a 1999 sunset on motors called for in federal legislation that will make the wilderness portion of the lake paddle-only.

According to an enrollment projection compiled by interim superintendent Ron Luoma, Cook County schools are looking strong for the future, at least where enrollment figures are concerned. Luoma said he found that the number of incoming elementary students is generally larger than the number of graduating seniors. Since 1993, total enrollment in Cook County schools has risen steadily from 702 students to 742; starting in the 1998-99 school year, projections show that number will continue to rise until the 2001-02 school year.
