A week after debating the pros and cons of maintaining a Gunflint Trail transfer station, the county board voted 3-2 Tuesday to put the site up for sale. The move is aimed at ridding the county of both the responsibility and liability of operating the site, and saving an estimated $40,000-$50,000 annually in lost expenses being used to maintain the station.

The Cook County Board of Commissioners voted last week to endorse a resolution to take the timber wolf off the Endangered Species List and allow state and local management of the animal. The vote came at the Jan. 27 meeting after a similar resolution from Koochiching County was discussed. Although there was brief disagreement about the extent of the wolf problem in Cook County, the commissioners seemed disinclined to keep the wolf on the endangered list. Protected since 1973 by federal law, timber wolf numbers have grown statewide. Recently a number of attacks on county dogs have been attributed to the predator.

In an ongoing discussion between the city of Grand Marais and Cook County Sheriff Dave Wirt, the latest figures Wirt has tell him it will cost the city $60,558 per deputy per year for him to take over total coverage of the city. Currently the city has its own police department and pays the county a share of the dispatching service and use of the Law Enforcement Center, but that could change if the city disbands its police department.

It was decided at a meeting of the firemen last Monday night that they would give a dance at the Wigwam next Saturday night, Feb. 4th, the proceeds of which will be laid aside toward a water pipe line to be added to the present fire equipment. The fire department has long felt the need of such a pipe, which will extend from the fire hall upward to the village hall. At intervals along the pipe hydrants will be installed, from which water may be tapped conveniently at a time when a fire occurs.

The deer that was killed by a car near Tofte Sunday was shipped to the game and fish department in St. Paul.
