On Saturday morning, Jan. 17, the entire downtown area of Grand Marais was without water. According to Public Utilities Director Russell Good, the main water line for the downtown area burst under Wisconsin Street due to age. City workers put in a 12-hour day to fix the 65-year-old burst pipe. Good said it was difficult to pinpoint the leak because the pipe runs through rock, and water was really splashing, obscuring the view. Also, because many cables and electrical wires for electricity, phones and cable television are near the pipe, the digging had to be done by hand.
