The EDA granted a pair of local contractors a 90-day agreement for sole rights to plan structures for three residential lots at the Cedar Grove Business Park at its Jan. 8 meeting. The agreement gives Chris Norman of Boreal Craft and Stephen Holz of Advanced Housing Concepts 90 days to prepare a plan for a duplex and two multifamily units in the park with no risk of the lot rights being granted to another contractor.
Snowfall amounts in excess of 18 inches were recorded in Grand Marais and along the shore last Sunday.
The county board approved the expenditure of $3,516 to clear trees and stumps from the site of the future horse park and arena at the Community Center. Community Center director Diane Booth said the project is on track to be operational in time for this year’s County Fair.

The Sawtooth Mountain Clinic is no longer on a funding cut list at the Bureau of Primary Health. That good news came soon after a conference call to the federal agency on Jan. 9. The local clinic receives $346,000 in grant money from the federal agency to provide access for low-income and poverty patients. The agency notified the clinic last fall that it was on a list of federally funded clinics being scrutinized for funding cuts. The exact reasons were never spelled out.
At a DNR public meeting in Ely Jan. 8, local residents said sightings of wolves were common in small towns. Some said their family dogs were killed by wolves and others said they were uneasy about allowing small children to play outdoors. “If there is one message you can carry back to St. Paul,” state Rep. Tom Bakk of Cook told the DNR staff, “it’s that most of the people in this room are afraid to let their children play outside.”

A thorough discussion was held on rates charged at the Village Tourist Park at the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce held Jan. 10. It was felt that rates charged were excessive and a detriment to the welfare of the village. As a result, the Chamber feels that a re-evaluation of the rates must be considered.
Mrs. C.G. Eidnes had the misfortune of receiving a fractured finger while visiting her daughter in Seattle. It was Christmas Day and they had just returned from church services, and it was raining. In the rush to get out of the car and under an awning, somehow the car door was shut against Mrs. Eidnes’ fingers.
The First Congregational Church of Grand Marais held its annual meeting last Sunday, and among business discussed was the disposal of the church’s property on Highway 61. The congregation unanimously voted to sell the property to Matt Johnson’s Grocery.

WGM – 247 Meters The pioneer broadcasting station of Cook County will be on the air every day from 12:40 to 1:30 p.m. At present WGM is using only 5 watts, but as soon as we get a larger transformer we will use 20 watts. Next week we will print a week’s program in advance.

Ragnar Marken and Ed Nelson lost the outboard motor from their boat last week. It fell off the boat into deep water and has not been recovered.
John W. Clark “mushed” from Gunflint on Tuesday for supplies. The trip down took two days. He started back Wednesday morning with heavy load.
John Anderson, local fisherman, had a narrow escape today when his motor refused to work. There was a strong off-land wind, which is still blowing.
