• What began as a discussion about job descriptions, policies, procedures and grants at a special meeting of the Joint Cook County/Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA) on March 9 ended up as a locked door mystery.

At one point, it came to light that EDA secretary and bookkeeper Missy Hagen had not been able to get into the former executive director’s office. According to Hagen, important files, books and e-mail access are all housed in the office, but she does not have a key.

“I still haven’t got a key for that,” she informed the board. “I can’t complete a lot of work without a key. There are files in there.”

Apparently, former EDA director Alan Christensen had changed the lock on his office, locked the office, and taken a number of important files to the county auditor’s office before he left his job without notice over one month ago.

The EDA board was shocked that the locked door was still a problem. • Students at the Cook County elementary schools have been gathering “Pennies for Patients,” and to date have accumulated $1,064.24!
