The population of Minnesota increased by 43,035 persons or 0.8 percent between July 2006 and July 2007, a slightly larger increase than seen in the preceding year and the largest percentage increase since the first year of the decade. Only New Hampshire, among Northeast and Midwest states, grew at a faster rate over the past seven years.
The Cook County commissioners held their annual reorganization meeting Tuesday, but for the most part changes were few and far between. Bruce Martinson was unanimously re-elected board chair, and Fritz Sobanja as vice chair.

The trial to decide if a snowmobile trail will stretch from Grand Marais to the reservation border is set for June 8 in Grand Marais. The state has tried to build a 33-mile snowmobile trail extension for several years, but has been blocked by a series of legal moves on the part of those who value the quiet and undeveloped nature of the wooded areas east of Grand Marais.
A brand-new hangar is nearly completed and ready for business at the Cook County Airport. The new building is being looked at by the airport commission as one of the final steps toward the goal of contracting with a fixed base operator to run the airport facility. The primary purpose of the new $295,000 hangar is for maintenance of aircraft; airplane storage is secondary.

Approximately $1,760,000 will be spent in widening and otherwise improving U.S. Highway 61 between Grand Marais and Paradise Beach this summer, the assistant district engineer said Tuesday night. W.T. Highmark said the work on the 14-mile stretch of highway east of Grand Marais would not get under way as soon as originally planned because they had run into difficulties on some land titles being acquired. However, Highmark said he was confident the work would start in July.
Balsam Grove Lodge will now be known as The Nor’wester Lodge, according to Carl E. Brandt, who has taken over management of the resort.
A fire of unknown origin destroyed one of the garages on the Lutsen Ski Area last Friday. The building had been part of the old chalet and was used for storing rental and other ski equipment.

In our issue of last week we made an error in the Cash and Carry Store ad. Pork and Beans was advertised at 10 cents per can and we made it 65 cents. The ad appears again in this issue, corrected.
Beginning this week the library will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 9 p.m.
Miss Esther Anderson has purchased an electric radio.
The east mail truck ran into the ditch on Monday near Chippewa City. Little damage was done to the truck and Mr. Olson was not hurt.
