Members of the Grand Marais City Council and Public Utilities Commission convened Dec. 19 for a joint meeting to discuss infrastructure projects scheduled for 2008. The most significant projects involve the reconstruction of portions of four streets at a maximum cost of $1.7 million, and extension of sewer and water mains into Creechville at an estimated cost of $2.4 million.

Sonju Motors, a longtime fixture in Two Harbors, has opened a used car lot next to Ryden’s Border Store here in Cook County. A good part of the reason is not just the favorable Canadian currency exchange rate, but that automobiles generally sell for less in the U.S.

JAN. 5, 1998

The purchase of the Tom Eckel property has taken a turn for the worse. At the regular council meeting on Dec. 30, the city of Grand Marais was informed that Dave Dahlquist has pulled out of the deal. The city had been preparing to make its first payment of $50,000 by Dec. 31, but without the money promised by Dahlquist, the deal is still up in the air. Dahlquist had agreed to pay half of the $50,000 purchase price in exchange for some docking rights. The city is still looking at ways to purchase the property.

Jim Norvell closed the doors of his Schroeder Short Stop convenience store and gas station for the last time Dec. 31. After 10 years of operating the small business, he said he is ready to try something new.

50 YEARS AGO
JAN. 4, 1968

The home of Stella Lyght, Lutsen, burned to the ground early Sunday morning despite efforts by the Lutsen volunteer fire department to save the structure. The blaze was fought in 38- to 40-degree below-zero weather with a 50 mph northwest wind blowing.

Earl Erickson of the Norshor Dairy reports that $177.36 worth of “fresh tabs” cut from milk cartons were redeemed at the dairy. To this amount Mr. Erickson added $22.64 to make his total donation toward the purchase of an athletics bus for the school an even $200.

The Go-Fer Store has re-opened after the year-end holidays and will now remain open indefinitely.

JAN. 5, 1928

Ed Kluck drove in from Kluckville today.

Emil Hall was called to Lutsen today to repair the engine in the school house.

Little Miss June Blackwell was confined to her bed Tuesday and Wednesday, having received a bump in the head Tuesday while sliding.

Last night the stillness of the wintry air of Grand Marais was rent with the clatter and the rattle of tin pails, gas barrels, cow bells and other melodious sounds – the event being a usual ceremony resulting when two people have agreed to take the matrimonial road. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Sjoberg were the victims of the uncontrollable mob of pleasure makers.

Albert Rindahl of Maple Hill broke through the snow and came to town Monday.

Henry Peterson is languishing in the county bastille, serving 25 days for alleged drunkenness and disorderly conduct.
