Fire destroyed a newly built home on Hut Point Road owned by Orwoll and Jean Anderson. The cause of the blaze is unknown, but the house was engulfed in flames by the time the Colvill Volunteer Fire Department arrived. The owners had just visited the house the afternoon of the fire and planned on moving in this spring. They were not there when the fire started.

The construction cost for the nearly completed Cedar Grove Business Park is currently below the original bid by $63,027, according to the project engineer who spoke to the Economic Development Authority board Dec. 11. The cost was greatly reduced with the removal of a contract for the final layer of pavement, as well as a reduction in the estimated cost of raw materials. Completion work on the park is slated for spring 2008.

The Cook County School District has proposed a 1998 tax levy of $3,131,427.67, which is a 6.8 percent increase over the previous year’s certified tax levy. It was noted that the district did not propose the maximum that could have been levied – that would have been $3,571,323,92 or a 21.8 percent increase.

Cook County North Shore Hospital nurse Pat Angelos has been named the hospital’s director of nursing, and will take up her new duties Jan. 1. Angelos has been a nurse on the hospital staff for the past eight years.

DEC. 21, 1967

As usual, Chik- Wauk Lodge has again decorated their hill on Saganaga. Each year, people motor the length of the Gunflint Trail just to see this beautiful sight.

Sixty employees were at the annual Christmas party last Friday at the nursing home dining room. Gifts were exchanged and a door prize was given to Mrs. Kenneth Blackwell, who received a gift certificate from The Market.

John Twiest Jr., Colvill, believes the wolves killed his dog.

90 YEARS AGO
DEC. 22, 1927

Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Robertson have moved in from the Fox Farm, having rented the Bramer building. Mr. Robertson has set up a jewelry and watch repair shop. They also have rooms to rent upstairs.

The Midway has sold four radios the past week.

E. Luick has installed a weather vane on the top of the signal tower.

Rev. Arthur Gustafson, a student pastor, has come to be with the Swedish Lutheran people over the holidays and will preach there next Sunday.

P.J. Bayle is at Finland building a log forestry cabin.

James Dunn is in from the North for Christmas and the turkey shoot.
