The proposed school levy for ISD 166 will go up 27 percent next year, which will generate more than $476,000 for the school district. The increase will primarily be used to pay for the heating and ventilation upgrades on the Grand Marais campus, said Chuck Futterer, school superintendent.

Sarissa Falk, 12, was honored this year when she was chosen to be St. Lucia at the Julefest celebration at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Saturday.

Wintertree, Inc. has received a financing commitment from a Twin Cities-area banking institution for construction of a 30-room luxury inn at Terrace Point, between Grand Marais and Lutsen, and the EDA has voted to allow an extension on the existing tax increment financing contract until Dec. 15, 1998. Information describes Terrace Point as “a romantic inn on the spectacular North Shore of Lake Superior.” It is designed to offer luxury, serenity, and the integration of structural and aesthetic beauty.

The recent complaints from citizens living on county-owned public roads which were not being maintained by the county resulted in the formation of a roads task force. That task force met on Dec. 5 to take the first steps toward finding palatable solutions to the problem.

DEC. 14, 1967

W.E. Shemild, “Iron Man of the North Country,” has just purchased his fifth Ford since 1914! Mr. Shemild is only 92, and has just hopped into his new car and skipped off to Arkansas for the winter. He still likes to drive cars and get around, but he draws the line on shoveling snow in his driveway on Good Harbor Hill.

Over 70 girls coming from Canada, Duluth, and Hermantown took part in a volleyball tournament Saturday at Cook County High School. The Canadian girls were the winners.

90 YEARS AGO
DEC. 15, 1927

Henry LeSage of Grand Portage was in town Sunday and Monday. He still gets his living out of good old Lake Superior, fishing.

One of the Lake Superior Fish Company trucks tipped over at Leonard’s yesterday. The driver turned out too far and was unable to get back on the road so as to avoid the ditch.

A severe blizzard is blowing today from the northeast. Passenger buses did not run, except the one that went to Duluth this morning. The Tofte school bus came in and went back early this afternoon. The other school buses also made their trips all right.

C.O. Johnson will have his grand opening Saturday.
