Just in time for the season’s first big snowfall, Grand Marais city councilors took action Wednesday to facilitate snowmobilers’ travel around town. At the request of Dick Parker of the Cook County Snowmobile Club, council considered and approved two items. The first was to author a letter of support to the Department of Natural Resources for continuation of the state snowmobile trailhead in Grand Marais. The second was to grant permission for the snow machines to use the hiking and bike trail along Highway 61 when the pavement is covered with sufficient snow.
By a 2-1 vote, the Lutsen town board gave its approval to the Lutsen Town Center Plan and sent it on for consideration by the Cook County planning commission. If the planning commission approves it, the plan will move on to the county board and eventual inclusion as an addendum to the county’s Comprehensive Plan.

The Cook County School District board voted unanimously Dec. 1 to hire Ron Luoma as interim superintendent. He will serve the district three days per week while the search for a permanent replacement for outgoing superintendent Don Langan is conducted. Luoma, who retired two years ago, is a 20-year veteran Minnesota schools superintendent. He lives in Barnum, where he was superintendent of schools for several years until his retirement.
A skier fell off a chair lift on Nov. 29 at Lutsen Mountains and suffered facial lacerations, a sprained ankle and a broken wrist. However, the 46-year-old Edina woman never lost consciousness. Lutsen Mountains officials said the woman fell out of her chair about 150 feet past the tower where she loaded. She fell approximately 30 feet onto rocky ground. Why she fell remains a mystery.

One hundred dollars has been designated by the local Chamber of Commerce for prize money in the Christmas decorating contest. Enthusiasm for making Grand Marais pretty at Christmas time has always been good, and the committee in charge of the contest hopes that many will take part again. In related news, the cross on the TV tower is now lit and shows well from downtown. It’s a 20-footer.
Nancy Howard fractured a leg at high school recently while in practice for a gymnast number. A cast was put on, and Nancy will be off gymnast participation for a time.
Lorraine Rustari recently experienced an accident while on a hike in the Split Rock area of the North Shore. She stepped off the path into the jaws of an old steel wolf trap which was partly concealed by fallen leaves. Fortunately she was wearing a steel-toe safety shoe and managed to free herself only by removing her foot from the shoe.

Chris Tormondson’s fish house at Tofte burned Tuesday morning about 6 a.m. Among the many things burned were four skiffs, an outboard motor, several hundred corks and nets. The origin of the fire is not known. There had not been anyone in the building for two days. The loss was over a thousand dollars.
A man was brought in from Good’s camp Sunday and taken to Two Harbors Hospital with a fractured skull. He was unconscious. The injury was caused by a falling timber. He failed to heed the warning call. He is a young man about 20.
On account of the severe storm, the Lakeview Dairy failed to deliver milk to their Grand Marais customers on Wednesday.
