Cook County Auditor-Treasurer Braidy Powers told the county board Nov. 20 that it’s almost time to end collection of the 1 percent local option sales tax. The tax, which has been collected for the past 10 years, was intended only to pay off bonds taken out for improvements to the Cook County North Shore Hospital and Care Center. Now that those bonds, totaling $4.37 million, are nearly paid off, Powers said it is the county’s obligation to repeal the 1 percent tax.

Students at Birch Grove Community Center are enjoying their new school bus, which was shown to them by driver Tom Muntean. The students will take their first trip on the bus to see Annie Jr. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts in Grand Marais later this month.

The annual holiday parade sponsored by the Grand Marais Chamber of Commerce was held in the 40-degree weather Tuesday. The best float in the business category was entered by Grand Marais State Bank. The best float by a nonprofit was entered by the Grand Portage community. The “Best of Parade” float was entered by North Shore Preschool.

The county board has unanimously approved a contract to be presented to the Cook County North Shore Hospital and Care Center board that will move home health services from county delivery to hospital delivery. The contract calls for all the current public health nurses to be employed by the hospital.

NOV. 30, 1967

A $500 Arabian colt, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Colborn of Poplar, Wisconsin, was mistaken for a deer and killed during the Wisconsin open season on deer. The Colborns heard the shot on their property (which was posted), and rushed out to find their prized animal dead. Mr. and Mrs. Colborn are the aunt and uncle of Mrs. Richard Anderson of this village.

About 200 persons participated in the union service of Thanksgiving at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. During the service an offering was received which will be presented to the Cook County Nursing Home for use in their occupational therapy program. The offering totaled close to $160.

Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Fay made a surprise trip to their cabin at the Brule last weekend. It was the latest they had ever been on the shore in the many years of having a summer home here.

90 YEARS AGO
DEC. 1, 1927

Morris Olson returned Sunday from a trip to the Ford plant in St. Paul. While there he rode in the new Ford and also saw all the operations in the making of the new car. He says it far exceeded his expectations in beauty, power and comfort.

The annual meeting of the Cook County Gun Club will be held at A.P. Anderson’s bowling alley Thursday, Dec. 22 at 8:30 p.m. Officers will be elected.

The snow plow was in Mineral Center Tuesday.

A false alarm was sounded yesterday when it was thought that the light plant was on fire. The carbon in the exhaust pipe became ignited and when water was injected into the pipe much steam, which was mistaken for smoke, was emitted, causing considerable excitement.
